4 reasons insulated vinyl siding works best

Siding contractors and installation specialists across the U.S. say one of the best vinyl siding products to hit the market in years is insulated, or foam-backed, vinyl siding. Siding professionals like insulated siding for a variety of reasons, though homeowners will find that it usually costs about 30 percent more than traditional, vinyl siding.

Insulated vinyl siding characteristics

Rigid, foam-backed siding offers many benefits not inherent in regular vinyl siding. Here's a closer look at some of the factors that make this variety, one of the best vinyl siding products on the market today:

  1. Appearance: Builders say the siding's foam backing creates a more rigid panel, which leads to straighter-looking walls.

  2. Longevity: Although good builders stand by their work, that doesn't mean they like service calls. Insulated siding is stronger than many other types of vinyl siding, so it better withstands the pressures of the elements and impact damage.

  3. Durability: Depending on the manufacturer and thickness of the vinyl siding panel, some insulated vinyl siding can withstand Category 5 hurricane winds, which are defined by the National Weather Service as sustained winds greater than 155 miles per hour. Insulated siding also helps reduce moisture penetration and reduces your home's chances for rot, mold and mildew problems.

  4. Energy savings: Insulated siding reduces thermal bridging, which is the transfer of cold through building materials into your home. Wood studs conduct cold, but the insulated siding acts as a barrier to stop thermal bridging. The same theory works in reverse for summer heat. The foam backing can increase a home's R-value by as much a five times that of conventional backing, manufacturers claim.

Insulated vinyl siding costs

According to Progressive Foam Technologies, maker of the Fullback V siding insulation, foam-backed, insulated vinyl siding typically costs about 23 percent more than standard, uninsulated vinyl siding, and just 4 percent more than uninsulated fiberboard siding. Other builders find that insulated, vinyl siding is usually priced at $450 per-square-foot installed.

Pricing can vary by manufacturer, siding brand and installation costs. As insulated siding continues to grow in popularity due to its many beneficial qualities, costs are expected to come down.
